Harwell Elementary School Outdoor Education Center
The Outdoor Education Center is sponsored by Downtown Lubbock, Greater Lubbock, Metropolitan Lubbock, and Southwest Lubbock, the four Rotary Clubs in Lubbock Texas.
The 18,213 square foot Outdoor Education Center at this title one school will be a state of the art facility designed by Texas Tech University architecture students and will include a science area, open-air classroom, eating/game area, a theater, reading area, a playground area, and an observation area. The education center will enable teachers to expand their instructional programs in science, mathematics, theater/art, and literacy, for example, the science station will further facilitate the integration of math by providing hands-on experiences to develop concepts, such as measurement of rainfall, estimation of fallen leaves in a given area, and differences in growth rate of plants and flowers during different times of the year, etc. Writing activities will follow all science and math lessons. Responsibility and care of animals, plants, and school will also be included in this outdoor educational experience.
The families of the students will also be included in this outdoor educational experience and invited to share in their programs both during and after school. The Outdoor Education Center will directly affect about 800 people yearly, including the students, staff, parents, and volunteers.
Seed Program – District Simplified Grant
Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary Club’s program “Rotarians
Sowing Seed to Fight World Hunger” shipped packets of vegetable seed and
provided training material to families and community groups to enable
them to grow vegetable gardens. The vegetables produced are a rich
source of important vitamins and minerals often missing in the diets of
the poor.
The program has a proven record. It is both self-help and cost effective
as people receiving seed do all the work. The program enhances people’s
self-esteem while boosting their teamwork skills.
Perhaps most importantly, children and families learn what foods are
important to good nutrition, and how to grow them. This collection of
knowledge and skills is their arsenal of weapons to fight the demons of
hunger, poverty, malnutrition and disease for a lifetime.

Meals on Wheels
Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary Club has been involved with Meals on Wheels for 21
years. Our club, for these 21 years, has been and is presently dedicated to
driving 2 delivery routes for Meals on Wheels every Friday noon. The first
delivery van used by Meals on Wheels was gifted to the Organization by our
Rotary Club. One of our members has been President of their Board. Our club
usually meets for 1 breakfast meeting per year at their location to not only
tour their facilities, but also to train Rotary members to be drivers and keep
all our members acquainted with the great services and good, nutritious meals
that Meals on Wheels provides. Metropolitan Rotary solidly supports this
organization and will be working with them in many volunteer capacities for
years to come.
